The Satyajit Ray Film and Study Collection

Dilip K.Basu
The Satyajit Ray Film and Study Collection (Ray FASC) was established on Satyajit Ray's seventieth birthday, May 2, 1991, at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). In 1993, Professor Dilip K.Basu, Ray FASC founding director, helped establish the Society for the Preservation of Satyajit Ray Films (The Satyajit Ray Society) in Kolkata. The two work in tandem as “sister” organizations. Both coordinate , for example, restorations Ray films by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Archives (AMPASA) in Los Angeles.

Ray FASC is organized as a “Focused Research Activity” (FRA) in the Humanities Division at UCSC. Over the years, it has built up a major collection of Satyajit Ray's films in 35mm, DVD and VHS formats, books on Ray and books by Ray, graphics, screenplays, articles in newspaper and magazines, posters and a sizable collection of production stills and film stills.
These are available to scholars, students and the general public exclusively for educational and non-commercial purposes. The Ray FASC provides public access to its database, following the World catalogue system of the Library of Congress, on the internet.

Over the years, Ray FASC has helped organize Ray retrospectives and exhibitions, and participated in film festivals in North America, Europe and Asia. It was invited to the Cannes Film Festival in 2005 to screen Ray's Pather Panchali to mark the film's fiftieth anniversary. It has also undertaken publication series on the works of Satyajit Ray .

Ray FASC hosts a lecture-cum-event with a Ray film screening in the month of October every year. It is named after its first major supporter the late Dr. Sidhartha Maitra. Past speakers include Vikram Seth, Pico Iyer, Partha Mitter and Sharmila Tagore. This year's speaker will be Professor Amartya Sen .
